The online exam costs $23.50. This money goes directly to the AAP. The 6th edition textbook, or an ebook, can be purchased at the NRP Bookstore.
Things to be aware of prior to attending a skill lab course with BabyMama:
Please read the book prior to attempting the online exam. Whether you purchase or borrow the book, it is very important that you read it. There have been many significant changes with this new edition.
You must take the test before you come to our skill class and then bring the complete verification certificate to the class or you will not be admitted into the class. Lessons 1-4 and 9 are the minimum requirements for AAP; of course, you may complete lessons 5-8 if you choose or if your organization requires it.
Be sure the certificate shows that you have successfully completed lessons 1-4 and 9, and fill in your contact info in the space provided.
A score of 80% is required to pass a lesson. You may retake each lesson once.
Do NOT wait until the day before the skill course to take the online exam. Otherwise, if there is a website issue, computer issue, or a lesson you are struggling with, you may not get your exam completed in time for you to be able to present us with your certificate, as required – and there are NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE.
Be aware that you will be required to retake the online exam if you fail twice. This also means that you will be required to submit an additional payment.
Please be careful if you are intending to complete all lessons 1-9. Since the AAP requires only lessons 1-4 and 9, if you complete these 5 lessons, in any order, and have not yet completed the “optional” lessons, the test will end and you will not be able to go back and complete any of the lessons 5-8 that you missed. For example, if you complete and pass lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9 – skipping 7 and 8 because you saved them for last – your exam will end, and you will not be able to get back in to complete lessons 7 and 8.
NRP does not qualify, certify or ensure the competence of anyone to perform these resuscitation skills in an actual resuscitation. Everyone at an NRP course may practice and learn all skills; however, that does not authorize anyone to perform the skill at any resuscitation. Check with your state’s licensure regulations to ensure compliance with scope of practice.
According to the AAP: the best NRP instructors will guarantee the quality of the provider course by ensuring that learning objectives takes precedence over just “getting through” the course components and distributing NRP cards. In the end, well-trained providers mean better outcomes for all babies.
The AAP warns: The only way to obtain an official AAP / AHA NRP course completion card is by completing the online examination, offered only through HealthStream, and completing in-person skills testing, simulation, and debriefing under the guidance of an approved AAP / AHA NRP Instructor, following the guidelines set forth by the AAP. Please use caution when choosing an NRP class, the AAP warns that there are online and classroom NRP courses that do not follow the AAP guidelines.
